For some reason this morning Jess and I were very tired but
getting a free bus ride due to broken machines pretty much made our day.
Jess and I got assigned to Koalas, which end up being a very
relaxing job as well, except when it is super hot outside and just standing
makes you sweat. The morning
started off with us cleaning off every ledge in the sanctuary and then hosing
off the ground of turkey poo, which is a lot of poo. The keepers didn’t know what to do with us after this so we
prepared bags of Roo food for sale until it was 10:15 and then we took our
morning tea break.
Bagging food like a boss.
BABY!!
Hello there...
SO CUTE!
Turtle.
They didn’t have any jobs for us until after lunch so Jess and I went to the feed shed to find work there. I walked in and heard tons of chicks chirping and thought “Yay! They are still alive!” turns out they weren’t, those are just the new ones that are 5 days old. I tan over to them and couldn’t stop smiling! Sandy walked in moments later and she had a job for us; changing birdseed and cleaning the food area in each bird enclosure. Not a hard job at all but Jess was standing out in the sun measuring seed while I was in the enclosures cleaning the trays, my job was better because it was in the shade and Jess was about to die from the heat. There are red-tailed black cockatoos in some of the enclosures and Sandy knows that I love feathers so she is keeping an eye out for a tail feather for me. I have a new found love for the aviary.
Finally once all was done Jess and I took our lunch break, I had a glorious home made toasted sandwich with a banana and then feel asleep on the sticky tables.
After lunch we had the task of removing eucalypt branches, dragging them away and then replacing them with new ones. Every time you enter an enclosure you have to spray your feet down and the leaves from the branches can’t touch the ground or they had to be washed. This job seemed to take forever but when we loaded them into dump bins we knew the end was soon.
Our last job for the day was going around to eat container that keeps the branches watered and filling them up with more water. Not a very exciting job and Jess and I were happy to get our bus and go home.
After not having a credit card for almost 2 weeks Jess finally received it in the mail today! We celebrated by going to Coles to go grocery shopping… such a treat! We finished our shopping with frozen yogurt and then parted ways so Jess could have dinner with a friend.
When I got back I unloaded my groceries, put my workout clothes on and headed out the door for my first run in almost a month. It felt so good to run again and I wanted to burst into a big smile because I was so happy to be running. I down one side of the river, across, back towards my hostel and then crossed the river again to get back to my hostel. When I got back I was red faced and sweaty, the look of what a really good run is! My legs were sore and my hands shook when I went to drink water but I felt incredible! I had a nice cold shower and then made myself a delicious salad for dinner.
After dinner I popped the blood blister that has been growing the big toe of my right foot for sometime now. I promise to keep it clean and not let it get infected!
You want to know something amazing… I am finally fully caught up on my blogs! Now I only have to write one a day!
Time for well deserved sleep!
