Up TOO Late...

This morning Jess did not come to work… she was visiting a friend and I had to bus and sleep on it alone.  The upside to today was that I got to do my work with another volunteer named Sam, whom is an absolute cutie; downside was that it was in macro pods.

The first bit of our day was spending more than an hour in a quarantine enclosure picking up after the three wallabies that are in there, picking tiny branches from the mesh roofing and cutting grass.  The first part wasn’t too bad but when it came to reaching up and grabbing twigs through the entire roof of the enclosure, that’s when it’s started getting hard.  The sun was hot and being trapped, reaching up every three seconds and straining your neck made it all worse.  After this was done the keeper got Sam and I too cut the big bushed of grass down… grass makes you itchy.  We cut so much grass and by the end we were tearing apart our arms and legs, no more grass cutting for me!

Next we headed to the feed shed to prepare food for the cassowary, emus, and kookaburras; we didn’t feed them at that point though.  Off to clean a different enclosure after food chopping we went.  This was fun because in the enclosure are two blue-winged kookaburras and two bush-stoned curlews.  One of the curlews didn’t like us and made the cutest humming noises and one of the kookaburras liked to swoop across our heads and put on a show; the blue on their wings is incredible!  Even though this job was clean up I really enjoyed it.  Before lunch we headed to the back part of the sanctuary that I have never been too before, only to cut branches for wallaby food.  While we were cutting though I noticed all these raptor feathers and some of them were massive!  I already have a very good collection of feathers but thought it wouldn’t hurt to add a few more gorgeous feathers.

Finally it was time for lunch; I had made sandwiches and toasted them in the grill at the sanctuary.  They were on multigrain sourdough bread with spinach, cheese, tomato and avocado… so delicious and everyone knew it too.

Back to work but only for 45 minutes so I could catch my bus home.  Now I didn’t do this because I couldn’t stand to touch dead animal but I watched the laughing kookaburras be hand fed chicks as well as watch the tawny frogmouths be fed which was really cool because they both swallow it whole.  I did get to feed the emus though, which was fun, even though it wasn’t hand feeding them I still enjoyed watching the silly things eat.

Back at home I made pasta with alfredo sauce and patiently waited upon Jess’s arrival to tell me how her day went.  When she sat down with me we minded our own business and talked and drank goon, we managed to grab the attention of the man sitting behind us.  The first and only question he asked us was our nationality and then continued to tell us all about himself.  He is in his forties, all the girlfriends he has only want him because he gives them money, and that back in the day he was really good at singing karaoke, especially Elvis Presley songs.  I pretended to be interested and kept talking to him and asking questions but Jess was very unimpressed and stayed on her phone the whole time.  At one point he even sang us a song; I could barely understand what he was saying and couldn’t wait for him to stop.  Keeping a straight face through this serenade was something of a task but I did prevail!

The both of us couldn’t have been happier when I suggested we go back inside to wash my dishes and get ready to go out, Jess agreed eagerly.  Back in the kitchen I couldn’t help overhear these three guys speaking Italian and I fell in love instantly.  Jess had to give me a bit of encouragement before I pretended I didn’t know where they were from.  The first one I spoke to is from Verona; I had just so happened to travel there with my mom, sister and aunt so naturally him and I hit it off and they gave us a glass of champagne each.  One is from Argentina and I forget where the other is from but his name is Caesar, which just so happens to be the only name I remember out of the three.  After some lovely conversations with them, it was about time I put on clothes and head out with Jess to find Chloe so we could have a great night.

Wasn’t long before we accidently bumped into Chloe and grabbed a cab to the Valley, which is where most of the clubs are.  Chloe seems to have friends everywhere and we ended up meeting up with them at a club called Birdees.  I really liked this club because the drinks are $4 and I didn’t have to pay for a single one.  At the beginning it was a bit awkward because no one wanted to get onto the floor and dance and I couldn’t stop moving my hips to the songs.  Finally after everyone had had enough drinks I dragged them to the floor and we started dancing.  The only one who was to shy to dance was Jess, I did my best to try and teach her but she would just laugh and bury her hands in her face.  At midnight I started feeling a bit tired and wanted to hit it home but Chloe was defiantly not wanting to go and Jess wasn’t ready yet.  We watched a wet t-shirt contest, which was pretty fun, until the girls started ripping their shirts off just to win, can’t have much self-respect doing that just to win.  It was something that I needed to see, only once though. So I waited and waited and then at 1 Chloe’s friend Gary taunted me to stay longer and I was not going to back down and leave!  Jess left soon after that with Gary’s friend Kyle; he was going to walk her home and I told her to text me if anything went wrong but Chloe and Gary said he is a pretty trustworthy guy.

Party time!!

Jess the silly goose.

Gary is at the end, Chloe is in the middle.

By the end of the night it was just Chloe, Gary and I left, still drinking and still dancing.  It was about 3:30 when we decided to leave and go get something to eat.  We went to pie face, they make insanely good pies; I got a spinach and cheese roll though, not a pie.  When I was buying my second roll I was hit on, very poorly if I might add, by a drunken guy.  He started off by saying “holy shit… holy shit, you are the hottest girl I have ever seen!”  I laughed at him and bought my roll but before I could sit down with Chloe and Gary he asked if I could sit with him, I have this habit of being nice even when I shouldn’t… so I said yes.  The main part of our conversation was how hot I am and holy shit, such a stimulating conversation!  Finally Gary asked if I was okay and I said yes but that it was time to go, the guy gave my hand a kiss goodbye but ruined the gentleman act by licking my hand after… gross!  We laughed the while way home in the cab.

It was 4 o’ clock when I got to bed and I was hating myself because in 2 hours I had to be up for volunteering…. Tomorrow will be fun!
