The morning was
fairly slow, which I was thankful for because I needed it. Did not take me long to recover though
before I was off helping with tours and spotting koalas.
Dave had me raking the entire front yard; we have a very big
yard. I would say I did a very
good job the considering that I didn’t want to wear shoes and the sun made the
ground very hot. While I was doing
this and dancing to my music, Michaela was unloading hay from a trailer for
Dave’s garden project. I was just
casually dancing to a remix when I hear Michaela yell “there’s a dead cat in
here!” I run over to a mummified cat sticking out of the hay. I run in side and yell at Dave to come
see it, he has a fascination with
the island cats and this one is no exception. Michaela lifts it up with her pitchfork and punctures
through its hip doing so. I was so
incredibly grossed out and I seemed to be the only one. Michaela made a nasty comment about if
she would find a dead litter of kittens in the hay pile as well, my only words
were “ew, ew, ew, ew, that is so gross!” she only laughed at me. No other dead animals were found that day,
thankfully only live ones.
The nasty dead cat.
Our day wasn’t over yet, the Organic Tree Farm still needs
to be cleaned and organized. It
wasn’t anything special; just empting out pots of dried dirt with dead plants
in them. We did find two tree
frogs, a larger spider with eggs and a centipede. To Dave’s joy we did get to plant some eucalyptus seeds, he
is very excited to see the garden start again.

Big spider with bigger egg pouch.
At home I patiently waited for my laundry to dry, it seemed
to take forever even in the hot sun and wind. I wasn’t going to wait around for it though; Michaela and I
decided to go for another bike ride, this time it was only around the
enclosure. Much less painful for our bums; we practically stood the whole time
so our legs ached instead. Right
after getting out of the shower Cat told me that a joey koala had fallen out of
a 25ft tree and the mother was not taking it back. He was too young to climb the tree and a mother koala will
never climb down to retrieve her young; it’s really sad. Claire ended up taking it back with her
because there was no way it would survive the night without mom.
I started on our last family dinner together when Michaela
got home. I pulled out all the
vegetables in the fridge and fried them up in a big pot for stir-fry. Nina made the rice and Dave barbequed lamb
chops. Dinner was very successful
when we sat down at nine to eat it.
There were several different sauces and dressing we all put on our food;
my favorite was BBQ sauce and hot tomato chutney.
We are all sad to be leaving the sanctuary tomorrow.
